Equity markets were a sea of red
across Asia today with sharp falls in Tokyo Hong Kong Seoul and Sydney driven
largely by the slide on Wall Street on Thursday. Meanwhile China is taking
steps to manage financial risks as it hopes to avoid a repeat of past crises
that mark their anniversary this year: the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the
2007 subprime mortgage crisis in the US.
Funds are cutting their record
commodities exposure ahead of an expected March interest-rate increase in the
US, and especially silver prices were whacked on Thursday. Equities were in
broad retreat in the US, while the US dollar's strength broadened, with
commodity and emerging-market currencies faltering on the latest surge of Fed
rate-hike expectations.
