Daily Macro – WSJ
Bearish Chinese data put a damper on Asian and European markets ahead of what is set up to be an important week. Anticipation of the Federal Open Market Committee’s meeting on Wednesday is also putting some investors on edge as well, with concerns that the FOMC’s statement will contain language making a clearer case for rate increases next year. So too is Thursday’s referendum on Scottish secession—although it increasingly looks like a victory for the “No” camp will be secured, the fact that the secessionists have done far better than anyone previously expected in polls has raised the prospect of a disruptive and complex breakup in the United Kingdom. And to add to all this, the European Central Bank is due to launch the first phase of its targeted long-term refinancing operation (TLTRO), an initial bank financing-led leg in a stimulus program that should eventually also include outright bond-buying by the ECB.
